A network of regional collaborations
One of the specificities of the PIMIT unit is its strong involvement in research and development in the Southern territories, through long-term local and regional partnerships. We collaborate with partners in Reunion Island, and in the islands/countries of the region, including Mayotte, Madagascar, the Seychelles, Mauritius, the Comoros, Mozambique, South Africa, and Australia. We work with laboratories, universities, environnmental associations, hospitals, and actors from the non-academic world. This contributes in strengthening and structuring research on emerging infectious diseases in the Indian Ocean region and promotes connections with other disciplines.
The laboratory is a member of "Biosecurity in Tropical Environments" Research Federation of the University of Reunion (BioST - FED4126), which aims to federate university research units and major research organizations.
UMR PIMIT also played a role in the creation of an innovative Reunionese company (Symbiotic) and continues to provide scientific support for the fight against the Aedes albopictus tiger mosquito through the use of the sterilizing bacterium Wolbachia.
