As part of the CHIK-TIGRUN project, “Chikungunya Epidemic in La Réunion (2024–2025): Vector Competence and Insecticide Resistance in Aedes albopictus,” funded by the ANRS, the UMR PIMIT is recruiting an Assistant Engineer.

Context of the CHIK-TIGRUN project
Following the Chikungunya epidemic that struck La Réunion in 2005–2006, affecting nearly 38% of the population, the island has been facing a new outbreak of Chikungunya since August 2024. The epidemic has intensified over recent months (with over 200,000 recorded infections), coinciding with the rising density of Aedes albopictus populations—the primary vector of arboviruses in La Réunion. While waiting for the widespread deployment of vaccination, containment measures rely on controlling Ae. albopictus populations through the use of insecticides. The main objectives of the CHIK-TIGRUN project are: (i) to analyze the vector competence of Ae. albopictus populations in La Réunion infected with various Chikungunya virus strains; and (ii) to characterize the mechanisms of insecticide resistance in Ae. albopictus populations on the island.

Main responsibilities and activities
The recruited candidate will be responsible for collecting natural populations of Ae. albopictus (eggs and larvae) in different locations across La Réunion. The role will then include: (i) amplifying the sampled mosquito populations; (ii) conducting experimental infections of mosquitoes in a level 3 insectarium, for the purpose of measuring vector competence; and (iii) analyzing infected samples through titration on cell lines. The candidate will also take part in testing to characterize the mechanisms of insecticide resistance present in Ae. albopictus populations in La Réunion.

 Candidate profile
A 2- or 3-year university degree (Bac+2 to Bac+3) in biology or health sciences is required. The position demands scientific rigor in the design, documentation, and analysis of data. Good communication and teamwork skills are essential. Prior laboratory experience will be an advantage. A valid driving license (Category B) is highly recommended due to the field mosquito collection duties.

The contract will be for one year, renewable, starting on September 1, 2025. The application deadline is July 15, 2025. Recruitment will be managed by INSERM, which oversees the administrative and financial aspects of the CHIK-TIGRUN project. The proposed salary will follow the current INSERM pay scale for contractual Assistant Engineers posted in French overseas departments and territories (DROM).

 How to apply: Please send the following documents as a single PDF file: (i) a CV, (ii) a cover letter describing your research background and previous experience relevant to the position, and (iii) two letters of recommendation. Applications should be addressed to Dr. Patrick MAVINGUI (cngevpx.znivathv@paef.se) and Dr. Célestine ATYAME (pryrfgvar.nglnzr-agra@havi-erhavba.se).
